WORKSHOPS

CAA presents workshops at which members study and create with a visiting artist. These sessions are extremely popular and are open to both members and prospective members.

In addition, our talented CAA members also hold collage and mixed media workshops. These events, as well as other regional and national collage workshops, are detailed in our email newsletter to members.

Wabi Sabi + Collage Stories + Book

Three-hour Zoom Workshop with Donna Watson

Saturday, October 25, 2025, 10 AM - 1 PM, PST

The Japanese aesthetic is an appreciation of the beauty of things not perfect, not complete and not permanent. You do not have to be Japanese to appreciate things that are affected by the passage of time… things that are rusty, earthy, textured and organic… a love of nature and an awareness that all things are transient. It is also an acceptance of the natural cycle of decay and aging. Wabi Sabi is about noticing and reacting to small details. It is fluid and ever changing, with a love of the imperfections in nature and in life. It is also a way of life…slow down, notice the small things, and accept the cycle of life.

In this workshop, you will see examples of wabi sabi. You will also see examples of artists who use wabi sabi tenets in their work. By watching a video, you will be shown different ways to age your papers. Then you will learn how to make a soft cover bound book and fill the pages with hand painted papers, or found papers like old book pages, or textured papers. You can use imagery found in books, magazines, rubber stamps, stencils, image transfers.

You can find your story to tell in your book:  suggestions:

—- content: what is your interest or passion? brainstorm words for

birds, feathers, nest, rocks, summer, blue, red, winter, tree etc

—-explore your heritage, family history or events, current events

—-explore your sense of place: current or past… trips, childhood

You will be given time to add papers, images, text, etc to your book to convey your content… or story. Then you will be invited to share your book and describe your content or story to the group.
