Abstract Collage with Vintage Books and Papers Three-hour Zoom Workshop with Sarah Z. Short Saturday, March 28, 2025, 9 AM - 12 PM PDT, 12 PM - 3 PM EDT
Sarah Z Short is a collage artist and printmaker working from the woods of Rhode Island. Using vintage papers and ephemera, she creates abstract compositions that honor the past lives of discarded materials. She’s drawn to what time leaves behind—worn textures, faded typography, the quiet evidence of use. Each scrap of paper carries its own history, and that becomes woven into the work. Most pieces begin with letterpress printing on salvaged book pages using wooden type. She layers and abstracts these prints until the letters dissolve, leaving behind shapes, whitespace, and unexpected visual relationships. The work is calm and structured, built on geometry and restraint. Each piece rewards a closer look. In this three-hour workshop, you'll learn to deconstruct old books and transform their pages into abstract collage compositions. I'll guide you through selecting and arranging vintage book elements, teach core principles of collage composition like layering, balance, and embracing imperfection, and give you plenty of hands-on work time to create finished pieces. By the end, you'll have completed 1-3 abstract collages and gained confidence working with found materials in a way that honors their history while making something entirely new. sarahzshort@driftwaystudio.com

Loosen up, find your creative self in this three-day workshop led by internationally known mixed-media artist Bob Burridge.
Discover the use of a new/old element in your artwork. In this two-day workshop, participants will use the discarded and the worn -- old books, maps, photos, letters, documents -- to create works of artistic beauty. Sylvia will guide you through processes to resurrect and repurpose these delicate items of the past into works of precious wonder.
In this hands-on workshop, Rachelle will demonstrate techniques on how to collage onto unstretched #4 heavy canvas, which will then be coated with heat-resistant acrylic varnish.
